Jackson County Jail Overview

Jackson County Jail is operated by the Jackson County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division at 787 W 8th Street in Medford. It is the county jail for male and female Adults in Custody, including people arrested by Medford, Ashland, Central Point, sheriff's deputies, and other local agencies that lodge arrestees into county custody. The jail also may hold sentenced local inmates, people waiting for transfer to Oregon Department of Corrections custody, and other lawful holds.

The official jail page says the building opened in 1981 and includes a kitchen staffed with AIC workers under a civilian cook, laundry services performed by AIC workers, indoor and outdoor recreation areas, a library, a law library, and medical services with registered nurses, doctors, mental-health professionals, and dental equipment. Sheriff Nathan Sickler's office describes the jail as a countywide custody hub, not a city jail or a state prison.

Jackson County Jail Capacity and Population

Capacity should be stated with care because official county sources use more than one number. The current jail page inspected in the research describes capacity for up to 292 male and female AICs. Broader sheriff, corrections, and jail-project materials describe a modified capacity around 300, with 315 overnight in some planning materials. The most accurate wording is that official pages describe capacity as 292 to about 300 depending on source and operational context.

Jackson County has treated jail capacity as a long-running pressure point. Official capacity-crisis material cited in the research reported 13,419 bookings in the reviewed period, 6,765 unique individuals processed through the jail, and 5,555 lodged people. It also found that 1,423 people, or 21 percent of booked individuals, accounted for 6,884 bookings. That booking churn is different from the number physically housed on a given day, but it explains why the current AIC list can change quickly.

Visiting Someone at Jackson County Jail

The official jail visitation page controls in-person eligibility and minister visits. Visitors are not eligible if they are currently on probation or parole or if they have been incarcerated in the facility within the past 12 months. Mail, Phone, Money, and Bail at Jackson County Jail

Mail to a Jackson County Jail AIC should use the AIC name and the jail address. Incoming and outgoing mail may be opened and inspected. Books have tighter rules: they must be new, sent directly from the publisher or Amazon, no larger than 9 by 12 inches, with no hardbound covers and no plastic or metal binding. When a person is sentenced to Oregon Corrections Division custody, transfer from the county jail may happen within one day or take several weeks. For security, the AIC is not told the transport time. Once transferred, lookup moves to Oregon Offender Search instead of the Jackson County current AIC list.
